Cancelling out emissions
Choices about consumption levels, patterns of food purchase and where one is employed are the crucial determinants of indirect emissions. For those activities we cannot reduce, we need to think about how compensate for our activities in other ways. The easiest ways to do this are purchasing green electricity, investing in new renewable power plants, such as community wind farms, planting trees or, just possibly, buying into other ‘offset’ schemes. But as the link here shows, even the best offset schemes do not reliably reduce CO2 emissions.
